AUGUST: Exhibition of members' work in Paignton Library

OCTOBER: New website goes live!

OCTOBER 10th

The first monthly competition of the season was held on Wednesday and attracted a large number of quality entries. Judge, David Bissell, had a difficult task, but finally decided Andy Cosway should take first place in the mono section, Clive Figes in the colour and Jackie Stevens the Slide. Congratulations to new member Chris Haywood for gaining 6th place in the colour at his first attempt!

OCTOBER 17th

Our annual inter-club competition against Sidmouth took place on Wednesday. The large TPS contingent that made the journey over to Sidmouth were made very welcome by our hosts, but were disappointed to be very narrowly defeated. Judge, Mike Elliot of Crediton, praised both clubs for the extremely high quality of the work submitted in all categories. The final result was:-

Sidmouth 350 - Torbay 343

NOVEMBER 7th

The second Monthly Competition of the season attracted a good entry for judge John Jeffrey CPAGB LRPS to comment upon. Maureen Harris took first place in the the colour section, Clive Figes and Jackie Stevens both repeated their respective success in the mono and slide sections from last month.

DECEMBER 12th

The last meeting before Christmas will become home to the Society's newest Trophy Competition. Long time TPS stalwart, Val Danby, suggested and offered a trophy for an internal competition, judged by the members. The subject? Simply the entry on the night that makes you smile the most! The idea itself brought a smile to the Committee's faces and it was felt that this was a perfect addition to the social evening planned for the 12th. So, despite the short notice, well over thirty pictures were put on display. With much banter and general frivolity the members got down to the none too serious business of voting. With no fewer than four pictures tied, Competition Secretary, Jan Lunn, called the members to order and asked for a show of hands on each, on the perfectly reasonable grounds that there was only one trophy!

So it was that Roger Edwardes' candid shot of a lady sharing a bench with a goat was voted as first winner of the Smile Trophy!

The whole evening was accounted a great success and Val's objective was achieved. Thanks Val, for giving the membership so much to smile about!

JANUARY 16th

The first competition of the New Year was our only themed monthly event of the season. Judge, Tim Stanger, Chairman of the Kingsbridge and District CC, was asked to judge on the theme of Images of Towns and Cities and his carefully considered and constructive comments on the fifty-odd entries across the three catagories made for an entertaining evening. Clive Figes took the honours in the colour print section, Roger Edwardes in the mono and John White the slide.

FEBRUARY 6th

Our annual battle with Shropshire took place on Wednesday 6th. Compiled to CD, judge, Maureen Dennis commented and marked the entries to be viewed by the clubs. Torbay emerged as winners and no fewer than 4 pictures from Torbay and 1 from Shropshire were awarded top marks, testimony to the high quality of work entered.

Torbay 472 - Shropshire 458

FEBRUARY 20th

Marie Minchington was our judge for the Pat Charleton Trophy and the Animal Print and Slide competitions. The Pat Charleton theme this year was "Candid" and four prints were required to form a panel. Clive Figes took first place and Andy Cosway took the runner up position. The Animal Print competition yielded the largest entry of the evening and Roger Edwardes' study of a Rhea won while another of Roger's prints also got the runner up slot! In the slide section, John White took the honours and Jackie Stevens second.

MARCH 5th

This month's competition was judged by our own Max Danby. Max often judges for other clubs, but tonight he was on home turf, passing comments on the work of fellow members. A flower study by Andy Cosway took the honours in the colour section, Roger Edwardes was first in the mono and John White won the slide section.

MARCH 19th

The most anticipated event of the season took place today and Guy Edwardes' illustrated lecture certainly exceeded expectations. Members and guests were treated to a selection of stunning images that, combined with Guy's entertaining commentary, gave an insight into the techniques and approach of one of the country's foremost wildlife and landscape photographers.

A memorable and inspirational evening!

MARCH 26th

Jean Ashworth was the judge of two Trophies this evening, the Ron Sleep for Portraiture and the W. Jesse Trophy for Landscape. Entries for the portrait competition was boosted by tutorial sessions earlier in the seasons, but Clive Figes stunning entry was a worthy winner.

In the landscape competition, it was relative newcomer Peter Bosley whose shot of Dartmoor most impressed the judge.

Andy Cosway bagged the runner-up position in both competitions.

APRIL 9th

The annual battle with Plymouth is always keenly contested and this year was no exception. Geoff Ashworth was our judge this evening and, with prints and digitally projected images, he had a lot work to comment upon and assign marks to.

Things were close after the prints with Plymouth just ahead, but they some strong images in the projected section, pulled ahead further and ended winners by a 14 point margin.

Torquay 403 - Plymouth 417

APRIL 16th

John Tilsley made the long journey from Dorchester to judge for us this evening, and, with no less than three competitions to assess, John had a busy evening!

It proved to be Clive Figes' night as Clive's images took Winner and Runner Up in both the Digital Print and Projected Image trophies. The Moore Cup requires three related images and Max Danby won with his set of gravestones and was also runner up with his series "A Day at the Races".

APRIL 30th

Mick Medley judged our Print of the Year competitions today. The colour section was judged first and Clive Figes' "Dawn In Venice" took first place, followed by Andy Cosway's beautiful flower study "Lily the Pink" as runner up. Mick Medley commended Roger Edwardes for his portrait "Nativity Angel" and another of Clive's prints, "The End of a Wonderful Day."

Mick felt the quality of work in the mono print section was very high and it was John White's portrait "Emily" that took the honours. Roger Edwardes gained the runner up position with his "Walk on the Pier", while Roger and Clive both had prints commended by the judge.

MAY 7th

Our last club night of the season was the showing of our battle with Islesburgh. Technical gremlins struck and, instead of digital projection, we had to content ourselves with viewing the images on a laptop perched on a projector stand! Spirits were not dampened though as the scores swung in our favour and we ran out winners by a comfortable margin.

It was a fitting end to the season and a good way to say farewell to The Moose Hall, which has served the club well for many years, as the club now seeks a new venue.

Torbay 487 - Islesburgh 451

MAY 15th

The presentation evening was held this year at the Park Hotel. Supper over and prizes distributed, members settled back to enjoy our annual battle of the sexes - The Ladies and Gents Battle! Colin Bracher was our judge and many of his comments and remarks matched the none too serious nature of the event. It was an excellent evening and thank you to Colin and also to the Park Hotel for looking after us so well.
